Text Box: Text Box: Lorraine Bates

Lorraine is the designer maker of Woodsetton Art Pottery based in the Black Country village of the same name. Lorraine gained her BA (Hons.) at Bath Academy of Art were she specialised in building oil and wood fired salt kilns before working in the pottery industry in Stoke for seven years.

At Woodsetton Lorraine throws, casts or hand builds the stoneware and porcelain pieces and also makes the pewter components featured in many of them. Her special interest is the development of the rich glazes, which flow during the complex firing, to give varying shades and textures.

The initial inspiration for this way of working came from The Ruskin Pottery, that was a local pioneering company in the Arts and Crafts era and followed the working ethos of that movement.
