Text Box: James Stead

After graduating from Cumbria College in 2000 with a degree in Design Crafts, I have always had access to a kiln, whether in potteries such as Guernsey Pottery and Gwili Pottery, Wales, or in ceramic departments in Weston College and Tudor Hall School.

While teaching is time consuming, I am able to use some out-of-term time to throw domestic ware in my studio. It is a joy to see the work in various stages of creation. There will be work that needs turning or waxing or painting or glazing. Handles may need to be pulled and attached.

Glazes are made through experimentation and I am currently looking to extend the range of colours which requires a lot of time and patience. The shapes that I have developed are meant to make a person want to hold and use them every day.
